Tips for a Warm Home Without Breaking the Bank

High energy prices have caused all of us to consider reducing our energy consumption. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to live in a cold home. There are several ways to keep your home warm without breaking the bank. Here are some energy-efficient heating tips that will not only save you money but will also help you to have a more sustainable and environmentally friendly home.

Thermostat

Programmable thermostats allow you to create a heating schedule that works around your daily routine. Setting the temperature to be lower when you’re out or asleep and higher when you’re at home can help drastically reduce your heating bills, as you are only paying for the heat that you need and not heating your home when it is empty.

Draughts

Small gaps around windows and doors can allow draughts into your home, forcing your central heating system to work harder. Weatherstripping and caulk can be used to seal any gaps, ensuring that warm air stays inside and cold air stays out. Always speak to your landlord before embarking on any DIY remedies.

Sunlight

During daylight hours, open curtains and blinds to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home. Sunlight is a free and renewable source of warmth that can supplement your central heating system, especially on sunny winter days.

Energy-Efficient Windows

Energy-efficient windows are designed to minimise heat loss. Double- or triple-glazed windows can help to keep heat in and have the extra benefit of also helping to keep noise out. PVC frames also tend to be better at keeping out drafts than old wooden window frames. If your rental home has old, draughty windows, ask your landlord if they will consider upgrading them.

Service your Boiler

It is a legal requirement for landlords to have the boiler in their rental properties serviced annually. Try and be flexible with times for the heating engineer to have access to your boiler to ensure that you are not impeding this. Having your boiler serviced annually not only ensures that it is safe but also makes sure that it works at peak efficiency. Not having your boiler serviced can lead to it breaking down. Only Gas Safe-registered engineers can be employed to work on a gas boiler.

Insulation

Good insulation is key to keeping your home warm. Check your attic, walls, and floors for adequate insulation. Asking your landlord to add or upgrade the insulation can result in long-term energy savings and a warmer home.

Dress Warmly

Instead of cranking up the thermostat, consider wearing layers and use cosy blankets to stay warm indoors. Wearing warmer clothes can help you to feel warm without needing to increase the ambient temperature of your room.

Implementing these energy-efficient heating tips can help you create a warm and comfortable home without running up exorbitant energy bills.
